I don’t do the stitch in the ditch on the top outer border when I’m quilting (that’s done in my step 4)
- Cut the sleeve the width of the quilt – 1” and the height of the outer border x 2 + ½”
eg. if my quilt is 20” wide and the outer border is 3” the size is: (20” – 1”) by (3” x 2 + ½”) = 19” by 6 ½” - Hem the 2 short sides by folding over ¼” then ¼” again
- Lay the sleeve on the back of the quilt along the top edge, right sides together. Center it (so about 1” from each edge). Have the top edges even. Put a few
pins along the top and bottom edge of the sleeve. - Flip it over to the front and do a stitch in the ditch in the outer border seam so it catches the sleeve.
- Take out the pins and fold the lower edge of the sleeve up to meet the top of the quilt. This should leave a little flap along the sewing line. This is the ease for the
hanging rod. - Baste across the top 1/8” from the edge.
- Bind quilt
HINT: If you have a really wide quilt do the hanging sleeve in 2 or 3 pieces leaving an inch or two gap between each so you can hook it to several hangers along the top instead of just at each end. It will hang better.
