Attaching a Hanging Sleeve With No Hand Sewing

Submitted by Cindy Cockell

I don’t do the stitch in the ditch on the top outer border when I’m quilting (that’s done in my step 4)

  1. Cut the sleeve the width of the quilt – 1” and the height of the outer border x 2 + ½”
    eg. if my quilt is 20” wide and the outer border is 3” the size is: (20” – 1”) by (3” x 2 + ½”) = 19” by 6 ½”
  2. Hem the 2 short sides by folding over ¼” then ¼” again
  3. Lay the sleeve on the back of the quilt along the top edge, right sides together. Center it (so about 1” from each edge). Have the top edges even. Put a few
pins along the top and bottom edge of the sleeve.
  4. Flip it over to the front and do a stitch in the ditch in the outer border seam so it catches the sleeve.
  5. Take out the pins and fold the lower edge of the sleeve up to meet the top of the quilt. This should leave a little flap along the sewing line. This is the ease for the
    hanging rod.
  6. Baste across the top 1/8” from the edge.
  7. Bind quilt

HINT: If you have a really wide quilt do the hanging sleeve in 2 or 3 pieces leaving an inch or two gap between each so you can hook it to several hangers along the top instead of just at each end. It will hang better.
