Putting on quilt binding using Wonder Clips

Submitted by Cindy Cockell

You can use this method to sew on your binding completely by machine.

I use 2 ½” binding. Sew it on as you normally would i.e. to the right side of the quilt. The only difference is that the seam allowance is less that if you were hand sewing. On my machine I set my needle position to about .5 (that’s a bit under 3/8”). I do a test first to make sure the width is correct.

When you fold the binding over it, the seam allowance should fill it completely. If you are doing hand sewn binding, the fold on your binding will just touch the seam line at the back. When you use the Wonder Clips, you fold the binding over and attach the clips.

  • The clear flat side goes on the back. The edge of the clear part should just be touching the edge of the binding
  • When you turn it to the right side, the red edge should be on your quilt border about 1/16” to 1/8”.
  • You will then stitch in the ditch in the binding’s seam line. The edges of the clips touch each other. So if you have a bit of a gap between the red edge and the binding you know you will be catching the binding at the back.
  • To do the edges I just put the clips right in the edge and move them as I come to the edge. I have a pkg of 50 clips and put them every inch as far as I can go and stitch that much then add more clips.
  • After I’m done I will go back and whip stitch the corner miters by hand to hold them in.
